    1970-71 Cars: What kind of door stops do you have?

    I hear the original door stops were aluminum in '70.

    The bolt spacing apparently differs from 1965-69 and 1970-89 , 1.5" and 1.75" respectively. And, these can be ordered, but they are made of steel.

    There was supposedly a third option, an aluminum 'cam-lock' type, available in 1970? - 71? (*NLA*)

    My Karmann car has the 1.5" bolt spacing like a 1965-69, so I wonder if mine would be the early steel type.

    Supposedly the Porsche built cars would have the 1.75" spacing and the aluminum .

    Believe this is the 1970?-89? 1972?-89?, 1970?-98?, 1972-98? '1.75" Steel' type...The way these are listed in various Parts houses is very confusing.

    These are the only pics I could find of the 1970-71? aluminum ones

    Supposedly they have a spring deal inside?

    Not sure how these work - my car was missing them and haven't had a pair in my hands.

    Scott, you could only use the type shown in your #2 photo if the pillar had a single tab which the early stop would go around. The later cars (70-up) had the double tab that the lever fit in between.

    1970 targa door stay

    Scott,

    My '70 targa came with the 1.5" aluminum 'cam-arm' type. Here are a few pictures. First an exploded view with original parts. Second and third are different views after cleaning up and replacing springs and bushings (with off the shelf parts from the local hardware store.) I can't remember where I read it now, but I recall that this type was used on 914s for a time too, so it may be possible to find used ones to refurbish.

    '70 Euro Door Stop

    Hey, Scott . . .

    Here's a shot 'o mine. looks like alu --- but now that I see your poll . . . gotta go back + double-check/make sure

    Never seen these outside of the car. Also, if these doors are even half as flimsy as BMWs, then a lotta these would get pulled-out --- as in, torn through the sheet metal of the door . . . over time
