"correct" finish for metal air cleaners?

Curious what the common belief out there is as I've seen restored air cleaners powdercoated in both glossy and matte finishes. Were cars originally delivered with glossy air cleaners that have dulled over time or were they dull/matte black from the start?

The heat dulls them down over time-- this is caused by the oils going out of the paint. I've seen some really chalky ones. But they were originally the same gloss as the rest of the black tinware.
