Fresh sheet metal: what is best to apply first for rust proofing

The underside of the 73 lost several spots of the original undercoating. The metal seems to have integrity so after cleaning it with a wire wheel, what is the best way to protect the bare metal?

I assume first protect the metal and then apply Wurth undercoating? Any suggestions/experiences/references would greatly be appreciated.

A self etching primer such as DuPont Variprime (my preference) or Wurth is best on clean or previosly rusted metal. Then whatever topcoats.
