Bought an 82 SC Last Weekend and was Pleasantly Surprised

I broke every rule in the book buying an out of state car sight unseen with no PPI, but after a couple hour conversation with the owner, a retired Air Force officer, I had a very good feeling about the car.

Flew from Seattle to Salt Lake City with a friend and drove the car back to Seattle over two days. Had never driven or even sat in an SC and I have to say that I postively love this car. It has full leather, AC, roof, and the usual stuff. Even though it was babied, it still had 156K on the clock. It has some minor issues - old cracked windshield seal, various switches need to be replaced, but all in all it is a solid runner. The 3.0 CIS pulls strongly, the 915 provides solid shifts, the heater exchangers pump in clean non-oiley heat, and the sport seats are unbelievably comfortable and supportive. It does everything very well, and is QUIET - reduced wind noise is just wonderful.

I love my 73 but this car is so refined (amazing what 9 years can do) it is an absolute pleasure to drive. Now I just need to start fixing all the little things before the backdate begins.

my latest car is a '79 SC, the 4th 911 I've owned with a big port 3.0, they are simply fantastic motors, and the SC's really have some great attributes. Bought it last fall, immediately drove from Atlanta to NJ, enjoyed every minute. (900 miles). Just completed a cross country drive, NY to LA, up to the bay area and back to LA, including Targa California.....car ran great every day, even after long days of driving, I was feeling like I could keep going.

I'm running Michael Eberhardt's Vintage Seats in my car, www.vintageseats.com, and they are terrific, that old-school look, but great support and great comfort.

One suggestion, if your car doesn't already have it, but I've found that eliminating the cross over pipe of the heat exchangers, by backdating the HE's or going to SSI's unleashes a ton of power, really opens these cars up and makes them run like they should.

pu - that is a great drive if the weather is cooperating. Glad you could experience what I did.

Wow Sonnett that is great to know. I just happen to have a spare set of old school SSIs and am planning on mating them to a sport muffler. (Not knowing much about the exhaust plumbing on these cars, does backdating the HEs lose the the Cat (and is there a Oxygen sensor which talks to anything) which will also impact the way the car will perform or are neither of those impacted. If you have the details that would be great.

    Thanks,
    Rick

my '79 (not a california car) had no cat, no O2 sensor, your '82 likely has a cat and O2 sensor. Yes, backdating the heat exchangers will lose the ability to have the cat, but you (or a muffler shop) can add the fitting (bung) for the O2 sensor.
