    FS: Custom Order H1's

    ** Both Sold **

I've been accumulating H1's for some time and have a good assortment of parts. Some bits are in beautiful condition and don't require refurbishing, others do. I can assemble two high quality pairs using the best parts with minimal restoration. Here are some pictures of the parts:

    buckets.jpg

I normally bead blast the buckets and paint them with a silver gray as close to the original color as I can get.

    reflectors.jpg

If the reflectors are in excellent condition I clean them and leave them alone. Most aren't at that level and require resilvering. I found a shop in Portland that does a great job but it's pretty expensive.

    lenses.jpg

My observation is that there are at least three generations of lenses. The first has the BOSCH in raised lettering on the outside of the lens. The second, which I believe is an early generation, has the BOSCH lettering on the inside. And the third, with the lettering on the inside, are the very good reproductions currently available. I'll provide some pictures in another post.

There are also the chrome trim rings - if I have good originals I have them rechromed, otherwise I use the currently available reproductions.

Then there are all those oddball H1 bits. Fortunately I have a large supply of those.

I'm ready to assemble two pairs using the parts that I have on hand:

    • Excellent original reflectors
    • Refurbished buckets
    • New chrome trim rings (I have some originals at the platers - they take forever)
    • New inner lens rubber seal
    • New fender mounting seal
    • New bulbs
    • Original adjuster screws
    • Lenses of your choice: clear original with raised lettering (some road rash); clear 2nd generation (some road rash); new clear or amber
    • Reproduction adjustment instruction labels on housing

The cost is $1,250.00 + shipping. Both sets sold.

    Thanks for looking.

    H1 Lenses Generations ?

The three have at least one mark that distinguishes each of them. Under the BOSCH lettering there is a little "squiggly: line followed by K11767. Forgive the poor quality pictures, but here is the line on the lens with the BOSCH in raised lettering:

    wave pattern 1.jpg

It looks like sharp mountain peaks, kind of like this: ^^^

This one that I believe might be the second generation has the BOSCH lettering on the inside, but the same squiggly line.

And here's a picture of a currently available reproduction:

    wave4.jpg

The line is wavy with rounded tops.

One more variable - I have an original RHD drive H1 lens with the raised BOSCH lettering and there is no squiggly under it.

    Hi Skip...

    No, I can't. They're on their way to the resilvering shop. Here's a link - http://www.realsteel.com/services/he...t-resilvering/

I think I made the assumption that they didn't tarnish. Sounds like I need to check with them. Thanks for the input.

    Hi John,

Also, keep in mind the fluting in the glass changed as well, at least in the first generation of the lenses. Very noticeable when you pair them up, and I would be curious how many of what I think are the 'earliest' pattern you have come across in your stash.

I am reminded of these posts I made in your info gathering thread a few months ago:

    Bryce...

I'll try to get some decent pictures of the lenses I have on hand and post them here.

    Thanks,

John, if you've ever got the time you should speak with Daniel Stern. He's a fascinating guy who is passionate about automotive lighting. He convinced me that the only way to get the true output of a light was to have the freshest reflectors (meaning most recently resilvered) you can get. The degradation that occurs to a reflector's surface occurs well before the naked eye can tell that a reflector is not 'perfect'. Basically he told me that every H1, even an NOS one, needs the reflector resilvered to put out it's intended amount of light.

    Just an FYI.

    Cheers,
    -Mike

    Mike...

That's interesting. They sure look reflective to the naked eye when they're in good condition.i will have several pair with freshly resilvered reflectors but they will probably have to be priced higher than these. I don't have an exact cost for the resilvering yet - I've asked them to give me a number when they receive the reflectors (I'm hoping to get a little break for quantity). But it costs more to do steel than brass and judging from their price schedule it looks like it will be over $500 for the four reflectors.

I did speak with Daniel Stern. Here's what he has to say on that:

Highly, highly dependent on what specific lamp we're talking about and how/where it has been stored. Much oftener than actual reflector degradation I see outgassing of other lamp construction materials causing chemical fog buildup on the reflector and the interior of the lens. This can be cleaned with Multi-Surface Windex and hot distilled water rinses followed by accelerated drying (e.g., hairdryer).

I'm currently restoring several sets of H1's and Mr. Stern has been very helpful.

I thought it appropriate when selling H1's to include a proper relay kit and he is providing them. Interestingly, in the formula for lumens produced, voltage is squared. If voltage drops 10%, lumens drop 30%+.
