Time to revive this thread I suppose (or maybe 1 day late?). Interesting race in the slop yesterday. Anyway, I'm in KY for a month or 3 and just got done watching the documentary Penny & Red: The Life of Secretariat's Owner. Wow, highly recommended with lots of behind the scenes footage. I'm going to visit Claiborne Farms and see the cemetery in the next couple of weeks.

Great pictures and history.
I attended several Kentucky Derby races from ~1975-1983. We would rent a RV and stay for a week. I have many great memories of those days:
I thought Justify looked good.

Well, the 2020 Kentucky Derby was postponed until Sept. 5, but that didn't stop the 'techies' from putting together a 'virtual' Derby. The greatest horses of the 20th and 21st century were all there...save one...Man o' War...whose owner decided not to enter the horse on May 8, 1920. Of course, Secretariat won....but it was close.

Incredible

Secretariat was technically a super horse, in that once he found his rhythm, endurance sealed it for him. Man o' war set records while being pulled up, and not given his head. Handlers genuinely feared he would kill himself. A ferocious competitor, with a 28 ft stride.

Caught this recently.. a show that discusses Secretariat and Citation. @20: 00 Arcaro indicates the manner Citation was ridden, and stresses not fully out. A rare occasion happened that he let him go, unofficially ran the mile in 1:33
At Belmont, Secretariat ran burning fractions with Sham, clocked the mile in 1: 34.
