Gib, funny I've been thinking the same. 1973 was an incredible year.

The Breeders Cup races are coming up, but since there is no horse like Secretariat in the field, this event filled day will go be unnoticed by most. Here is a great article on Secretariat from ESPN..http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00016464.html that does a great job of summarizing the life of this great horse. Secretariat was voted the 35th greatest athlete of the 20th century...quite a feat for a horse.
I like the quote by Penny Chenery...To this day, Secretariat remains one of the first names everyone thinks of whenever the topic of horse racing comes up. "It's hard to believe after all these years," Chenery said, "but hardly a day goes by that I don't get mail about Secretariat."

Alas, much like Affirmed....Secretariat was neither a very good sire, nor broodmare sire.

GONE...MANY, many great ones....
As a breeder of show horses, I can attest to the difficulty of predicting how genes will be passed on to 'get'. Even with today's computer data crunching and analysis, breeding the 'best to the best' is no guarantee of getting a great race horse. Only once in a very long while does a great one come along...and it brings much joy for me to watch it in a tough stakes race. It is interesting to me that with all the 'smart data' available, and fortunes spent, no horse has been able to beat Secretariat's times in the triple crown. Some say the genes have run out of their potency....so we may never see the likes of Secretariat, Man O' War, Seattle Slew, Citation, and Affirmed again. Being able to watch the great races of these super horses on Youtube is like time traveling....and nostalgia is one of my favorite sentiments these days.

It's getting near the beginning of the 'triple crown season', so time to revive this thread so that those interested in the 'greatest 2 minutes in sports' can be sure to tune into the Kentucky Derby this year.
I also have an ulterior motive for suggesting the viewing...my son 'Gib' will be shown in a GE Capital commercial during the broadcast. Here is a print ad that will be in USA Today on April 28 (I think), and some may have heard one of several radio spots last Monday in Houston, Dallas, New York City, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, Miami, Pittsburgh, or St. Louis featuring Gib's message...which will be repeated tomorrow (4/14). I just had to let you guys know that it is not me on that radio ad, but it makes me a proud father.
Unfortunately, the color print ad was too large a file in pdf form to upload, so I had to scan it in as a b&w ad.

really kind of exciting. I've never been into horses or horse racing but that was cool to watch. How long till secretariat is cloned?

Perhaps the greatest derby..?

I'm sorry...maybe in an alternate world....going from last to first in still-standing record time (almost 3 seconds faster than Seattle Slew's time) in a huge field...Secretariat's Derby leaves the Slew in Derby dust.
