Thread: Fame in 1973...Carrera RS and Secretariat

    That grin says it all

Unlike you all, my knowledge and experience of thoroughbred racing would fit in a thimble. That said,
I love horses and have always been fascinated by natural athletes- think Bo Jackson.

The second video, The Preackness is awesome. Secretariat coming from last to first in a mater of seconds is very, very impressive.

It's hard to believe it has been 10 years since I started this thread...now 50 years since Secretariat won the Triple Crown races, and Porsche produced the Carrera RS. You don't see as much in threads and articles about the CRS, now mostly about various high end cars built from modified 964s. Covid took the Triple Crown races out for awhile, but there was a lot of enthusiasm and anticipation about this years Kentucky Derby. It was not a memorable race with the favorites no where near the lead. We'll see what the next 2 races bring, but most likely nothing to put in the memory books.

An interesting moment in the buildup to the Derby was a short clip with Tom Brady talking about how fate played a roll in both he and Secretariat's careers. Tom is unquestionably the GOAT for quarterbacks in the NFL, and he makes a tribute to Secretariat as being the GOAT thoroughbred race horse. Neither will most likely ever be exceeded in their achievements, so it was a fitting clip to throw into the Derby coverage. An NFL 22 year career with 32 competing teams generates so much more statistics to compare, and since the Triple Crown races are compressed into 5 weeks in one year, being an NFL GOAT is a much greater accomplishment. But I still get a thrill like no other watching these races, because after all, we're watching an animal compete...not just a human.

Anniversary bump to this outstanding thread:

50 Years ago today - June 9, 1973 - Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes with a 1 1/2 mile track record that still stands to this day.

Johnny Loftus' had years under his belt working thoroughbreds before his first exercise session with Man o' war :

"I've never felt anything like that horse..."
