    The Targa Cometh

Hagerty April 2013 data. I only looked at 1971 and 1972 before getting bored. There's a pattern. Targa values began to surpass Coupes across the board about 2 years ago and the gap has slowly widened.

Disclaimer: I have no idea where the data comes from ... they could make it up for all I know

Then why does it always seem the coupes sell for more in the real world?

Here's the guy to blame "The editorialization of our pricing data is conducted by a host of contributors, but it is all filtered through independent appraiser and senior ASA member David H. Kinney. Kinney is a renowned market expert who writes regular columns for AUTOMOBILE, AutoWeek, Hagerty, and Octane magazines, and contributes to the New York Times. He is deeply involved in the hobby, judging at events, attending dozens of auctions annually, routinely buying and selling cars, and appraising hundreds of vehicles per year. The prices reported on Hagerty Valuation Tools are the product of Kinney’s market expertise."

There's an asterisk there somewhere that says -10% for glass rear window.

The interesting thing is that up until last quarter there used to be a modifier in there for -10% for the targa, but now it's gone. This is what is in there now:

    Notes/Buzz

+10% for factory a/c. +10% for 5-spd. +5% for factory sunroof on cpe.

But for some reason, no asterisk that says -10% for Sportomatic. That's your cue, Frank...

Targas are fun... with enough effort you can even make 'em sorta water resistant, but Hagerty's opinion doesn't change reality.

IMHO, the 911 is one of the few classic cars where a really good coupe is preferable to one that can go topless.

    And I like Targas.

I've actually had quite a few people asking me to help them find Targas recently. Of course, they already own multiple coupes...
