Got my Dad's 1968 911, need info & ID help

    Hi everyone.

I just got a 1968 Porsche 911 from my Dad and don't know much about it. He bought it at a rummage sale in rural Kenosha County, Wisconsin about 12 years ago. The man he bought it from had it in storage for many years with some other old cars and has since passed away.

How do I find out exactly what type of car I have? Do I start with the VIN or something? Where do I look for info?

The trunk lid just says "911" and doesn't have an S, T, L, E or anything.

The car works good but has a small oil leak. No rust but the interior is a little rough. That's about all I know. It does have a title.

I'd just like to know more about the car and fix the oil leak. Then take it for a local spin once in a while. Thanks!

    Andy

Welcome. Pics of the car and engine would be a good start.

    Thanks!

Post your VIN, there's a lot of info in those numbers.

If the car has no letters, then consider it a 911 (Normal) a step above a T and a step below the L & S. The 911 & 911L were imported into the USA in 1968, and the VIN will start with 118. 119 would be a 1969, and a 3 or 5 would be earlier. The engine # is on the right hand fan support, and the type # & build # are a few inches back and to the right on a horizontal surface:

The paint code is on a badge riveted on the left door hinge post along with the VIN if 1968 or earlier; get all the details.

    Hi everyone.

So here's what I could find:

    11830A16 or 11830416

    97-6802-L

It's very hard to read the engine, but I think it says:

    901/14
    12776

Then I think 3280785 on the side of the fan.

I have some pictures, will try to post them shortly.

    Thanks!
