We have recently had a 1968 - Right Hand Drive car turn up for a service and annual inspection and to an initial glance from a few feet away didn't look too bad. It had been messed around with and had an Impact Rear bumper, poor paint and interior but was seemingly complete.

Once we tried to sit in the in the car it all started to look horribly wrong!

The pedals (Beetle Pedal Box) were in completely the wrong place and were about 6-7" too far forward.

It was clear that although the column was on the Right Hand Side, the Smuggler's Box was from a LHD car and was still in place.

The Beetle Pedal box had been fitted as clearly the correct RHD pedal set would not fit.

As we stripped the car to find out more the complete horror story unfolded

The instrument 'pod' had been cut away and welded into the RH side of the car and the gaps filled with angle iron.

The steering column was welded to another strip of angle iron which was in turn welded to the main angle iron brace.

The steering wheel and column had also been extended badly - still with all the LHD universal joints in place.

I hate to think what may have happened if the car had suffered a front end impact!!

The only thing to do is to cut out all the poor parts and start again with correct RHD Bulkheads and floor sections, pedal box and locate everything correctly.

The seat belt mounting points have also been fitted just as badly.
