Cleaing/tumbling an aluminum crankcase and where is the marking on the crank gear??

Anyone know of a place to get an early alu. cases to look 'like new'? Preferably in NorCal. Or is there another method? Also, on the crankshaft drive gear (for the int. shaft) where is the '0' or '1' marking? Thanks

ollie's for sure can tumble the case to look like new. if you find a better norcal tumbler let me know!

the '1' or '0' is on the case, not crank. IMHO this doesn't matter; get the crank, case and i-shaft you plan to use, and set it up and measure the backlash. the '1' is supposed to be 0.05mm (~0.002") greater diameter of the alu gear, according to the book. not saying, 'don't worry about it,' i'm saying it's so close you really just need to set up and measure.

    Ollies, as seen here:

In the second photo down you can see the "0" stamped in the case and there is a corresponding "0" stamped in the IS gear.

Thanks, yes my case and int. gear are both "0", I was wondering about the gear on the crank, which is unmarked. Tumbling of my case was 'forgotten', so I'm looking for an alternative to boxing it up, shipping it back ($$$), waiting a couple weeks to get it back. (+$$$$$). Thanks

    Brian,

Take it to a soda blaster. The great thing about soda is that it is water soluble, so if you give it a good cleaning afterward you will come up with a nice finish and not have the FOD concerns you would with glass beads. I soda blasted my gearbox and it came out great.

I have a small blast cabinet, a solvent tank, and will get soda and d.i.y (is that d.i.m?). I'll take befores and afters. We'll see...
