Up for sale is our 1976 Porsche 912E. We bought this car last Spring on something of whim with a plan (dream?) to turn it into a hot rod 911 of some kind. Since then I've gotten to know some other 912E devotees and have decided against it. A recent acquisition of an '86 911 has unfortunately sealed the fate of this one. We'd like to keep it, but four cars into a three car garage do not go, and the lovely Mrs. is enduring her Subaru Impreza being left outside so all of "my" sports cars can stay warm and dry. So it's time to sell...
First off I must make clear that despite the shiny photos this is NOT a concours car, and at 153,596 miles most definitely qualifies as a "driver" and a cosmetic "10 footer". If you're looking for perfection, stop reading now.
That said, this is a fundamentally straight, solid, good driving car that has never let me down. It can be enjoyed as-is, or bought as a "running project" for someone who wants to bring an old car back to its shiny glory.
I have a little (but very little) history on the car. It was originally a Continental Orange, sunroof-less coupe. Somewhere in its history somebody turned it into a 74 Carrera look-a-like, complete with SC flares, a ducktail, and Carrera stripes. We immediately un-pimped da auto and brought it back to a nice, clean coupe. Obviously, it still has the SC flares, but the duck and stripes (and some bad fog lights) are gone. We then took it to SCR Porsche in Loveland for a baseline service (oil change, trans fluid change, brake flush...I asked for a valve adjustment but our mechanic suggested it was not needed at the time) and have also had a few other items fixed or updated (4 new tires, new turbo tie-rods).
The engine retains its original fuel injected configuration, although a lot of those parts are new(ish). I have receipts that show a rebuild at 140k miles (Feb, 2005), all new vacuum lines at 146k miles (May, 2006), and new cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, and fuel line at 152k miles (April, 2011). We had a small surging issue (traced to the fact that I leaned the mixture too much in an attempt to lower the idle speed), during which our mechanic ran through the entire FI system, which is all working well. The only "issue" to bring to light is, during a compression test, one of the cylinders was a little low, with our mechanic suggesting it will need new rings in time.
The transmission shifts fine. We also have a receipt showing a rebuild on the trans at 128k miles (Jan, 1998), and at 150k miles (Aug, 2010) the shift bushings were replaced. There is a slight "nick" shifting into third, but it's not bothersome and doesn't deter from the enjoyment of the car. You really can't hear it yet, just feel it if you rush the shift.
The body is...tired. Originally Continental Orange, the aforementioned personality change also came with a color change to black. The paint job is...ok. It's holding up, but has its imperfections. On top of that, there is evidence of a (low speed) front impact. The body and tub are straight, but in the photos below note the relationship of the driver's side front fender to the front bumper, along with the hood fitment. From the door seems back all panels have a good fit. The only other real cosmetic issue is one of the rear bumper pads has torn and is pulling away from the bumper. The chrome trim around the front and rear windows has been painted as well, but this just needs a little elbow grease to set right.
To my knowledge, any rust on this vehicle has been repaired and it is currently "rust free". I can't guarantee there is zero rust, the car is 37 years old, but the "usual" areas are clean (the front trunk appears to have been repaired at some point).
The interior is largely original save for a leather covered dash. The seats are in overall good condition (see photos). Door panels and pockets are good. Everything works but the clock and the horn (it worked when I bought it, not sure what happened). It even has a radio. I think it works, too...
Overall I have about $15k into this car. I know the values of the 912E vary greatly, but this is a solid driver and an inexpensive way to get into Porsche ownership. We're looking for the best offer over $10,000. We don'thave to sell, so please no lowball offers.
