    Headlight lesson?

    Can someone tell me about these two types of headlights? What are they called? Is one considered better than the other? What years were these used? Etc...

    The second one is a Bosch LHD H1, popular with many.

    the first is called the 'sugar scoop', and was the stock offering from 68 onwards.

    It was the stock USA offering (if I'm not mistaken). This was the result of an antiquated law requiring sealed beam lights in US cars. Most people prefer the look of the "euro" H1 & H4.

    It's hard to see in the hot, but the headlight in the first picture us very flat...no curve to it. I thought stock lights were curved?

    Its a European 7" replaceable bulb lamp in a US sugar scoop bucket. The Hella/Cibie/Bosch lamps had much flatter lenses than the US sealed beam lamps.

    More likely H4 unless in a biode or 4x5" setup. H1's are single filament.

    Is that first light considered a good light? Do people convert to the 2nd light strictly for the look?

    Light #1) US spec ring/bucket with 7" round H4
    Light #2) H1

    The first light throws a wonderful beam, but people just don't like the look of the wide chrome ring.

    The second light sucks. It's unnecessarily complicated, doesn't light the road very well - although they do work better than sealed beams - and they're excessively expensive for how awful they are.

    The H1 looks very similar to the European H4 but has extra adjustment screws in the ring. The European H4 has become the most common headlight to install (in every 911 up to 1994) because you get the look of the H1, brand new they're 1/3 the price of a set of used H1s, and they throw a great beam.

    Personally, I like the US H4 7" round lights because they're super cheap (about $100 pair brand new) flame throwers that, nowadays, you just don't see on people's cars. However, my current car has Euro H4s because they were there when I bought the car and I'm too lazy to change them.
