    1969 911T questions and new member!

    Hello all, long time listener first time caller.

    I've been searching for a classic 911 for quite a while now and I found one recently which is a great original car, engine, trans, color and miles, all 189,000 of them at a very reasonable price. I jumped at the opportunity and I am a very proud 911 owner. The car hadn't been sitting idle for a long time but it hadn't been driven on a regular basis either. The previous owner took the car to a Porsche specialist who did a service on the car before I bought it, now I've been driving it around for a week or two loving every minute!

    In the past few days I've noticed the dreaded blue smoke coming from the tail pipe under hard acceleration, oil getting past the piston rings? Time for an engine rebuild? The compression numbers from the service are good from all cylinders and the motor starts / runs fine. Could it be just lack of use? Will they re-seat if I drive more?

    Yesterday when starting off in 1st I got a howling noise from the transmission, no other gear change up or down, just first. It's a 5 speed.

    When I'm in the car driving I hear a buzzing like crickets constantly from the rear which is driving me a little mad?

    Apart from all that she is a beaut and I want to bring her back to full strength and just drive her with a huge grin on my face as I have this past few weeks.

    Congratulations! Welcome and stunning color and look! I wish I could help with your questions but do not have the experience myself but will watch with anticipation (as I'm sure you are) for responses from experienced members.

    ignore my answers, most are somewhat tongue in cheek, but I'll try...

    blue smoke, yes, drive it.....as long as you have oil, you won't hurt it....yes, these cars smoke a lot when you drive them if they have been sitting a long time. If compression numbers were all good, you have less to worry about, but top end rebuilds can be needed, too....am thinking valve stems, but who knows.....ALSO, important, check oil level only when car is fully warmed up, and on a flat surface, and with the car running, but at idle.....and check and compare the dipstick versus the oil level gauge.....but always trust the dipstick more, as long as you are warmed up, flat surface and idling. if the car was overfilled, you'll get a lot of blue smoke

    901 gearbox (dogleg....first gear is below reverse, 2-4 is the 'standard H pattern), it is pretty common for first to have a bit of noise, but if it is a lot, you could be ready for a rebuild....nonetheless, if you are gentle on first gear, which you should be, you probably can get a lot more miles out of it.

    #3-call an exterminator, maybe you have crickets? otherwise, is it kind of a squeaky-squeaky noise over slight dips in the road? my first guess is it's torsion bar bushings, but there are lots of cricket noises possible in these cars.

    Welcome, Kav. Looks like a really nice car in an unusual color... Canary or Champagne Yellow? Hard to tell from pics.

    When you say constant and buzzing, I think of the sound of the MFI which is audible in the car at idle. But your car is not MFI if it has the original engine, so... Is this a noise when the car is moving or idling or both?

    The car is Canary Yellow!

    The buzzing is at idle and moving. It is definitely electrical based.

    Welcome and Congrats on your purchase. I'm a fellow 1969 911T owner. As longranger suggested please stop by EASY on the first Sat of the month.

    As for the buzzing sound my guess would be the Bosch CDI box located at the drivers side of the engine.

    Kev - I do hear a buzzing sound when at idle but since I have a sport exhaust I don't hear it while driving. Could also be that I'm used to the sound and just don't hear it anymore.

    If you turn you key to last setting before crank mode you should hear that buzz noise which is perfectly normal.
