Neil, here's an "exploded view" of the pump.

Size: 71.7 KB As you'll note the pump has had a hard life, but not beyond repair - hopefully.

Size: 90.0 KB This is the armature and commutator which is showing lots of wear. Brushes and connector - note tension springs for brushes have been removed. The coiled copper wires appear to be suppressors. Don't lose the 5 small parts which fit into the spaces in the rotor.
    Hope this helps.

Update: both fuel pumps now functioning! #1 back in car and working fine. Gave #2, the other one's copper windings a good clean with some electronic cleaning solvent and a soft wire brush. Now works fine. Leak test to be completed tomorrow on #2, (that's the ugly one above), then a fuel resistant paint job before installing back in car.
    Thanks for the advice guys!

Thanks. I hope I never have to consider doing what you did, but it gives me an idea of what is in there if it ever goes out.
