What would be interesting is to compare the Händler Nr on a vehicle's Kardex w/ the designation of the dealership that sold that vehicle?

You are right Rick,
The 422 prefix was Culver city. I remember our dealer number was 422-026. (Sierra P/A Riverside)I may be off, I'll look to make sure. They added a bunch of numbers when they started the P/A dealers.

Handler on my kardex is 915, which according to the window sticker, was Volkswagen Southeastern Distributor, Inc in Jacksonville. Kardex shows Volkswagen of America.

I am curious if this code was also used for Brumos, as switchover from PoA (Brumos) to VoA was right around my car's entry into U.S.

I agree that the final two sets of numbers seem to corrrespond to a specific dealer

My 1971 T targa, which i acquired a year ago came with the owners manual in a red vinyl cover and the origonal Maintenance Record in a matching red vinly cover. the Maintenance Record has first owners name, address, vin and delivery date (with odo reading 32 miles) along with 6 service records. Maintenance was done at 589,6450, 14,752,19,328 and 24,953 miles at Triangle Porsche Audi, Durham N.C from dates Oct. 1971 to April 1973. each blue stamp in the book has 408/B03 which must be the dealer stamp. The last maintenance record is Aug. 1975, 33,808 miles and has the stamp for 21577 Roscoe Blvd, Canoga Park Calif. 91304 - but the name has been stamped over and can't be read. Dealer code is 422-A27. The maintenace book even has a red computer punch card to be given to dealer for the 600 mile service.

Digits 1 - 3 = Code number of main dealer or importer


Digits 4 - 6 = Code number of dealer, authorized workshop or branch premises


Digit 7 = Index number defining the authorized workshop in accordance with the following key:

0 = Main Dealer or Importer
1 = Dealer
2 = Authorized workshop
4 = Branch premises of main dealer
8 = Main dealer organization not situated at main dealer’s head office . . .
