    Shipping by air.

Recently bought an oil tank, which British airways refused to let me load on plane as checked baggage. Does anyone know if there is a policy on shipping car parts will this need to be shipped by sea?

I am not without fault here, as I was in a rush for plane so didn't check tank to see if it had oil in, just opened the package as shipped and resealed.

Was told there is policy on shipping flamible cargo and that includes an old oil tank.

Should I clean and try again on next visit?

    Rich,

You can still air transport it, just use DHL or TNT. Don't put it on a passenger plane please.

Tell them it's a water tank.

    Freight it properly.

I've delt with a cargo fire before, and they aren't fun.

I recently took a muffler on a passenger plane as checked baggage. But carry-on is what is stopping you. Send it as checked baggage when you board and you should be ok.

The oil in the tank is not flammable. It's considered to be combustible (it has a much higher flash point - gasoline is flammable). I would assume, though, that the oil in the tank is used and would be be considered hazardous waste. So...empty it, clean it and then ship it. My .02
