I'm looking at a car
Coupé Chassis no. 9112501863 Engine no. 6523175
do I need to apply for a certificate to check if its matching? Any help much appreciated, I'm new so not sure if I'm being cheeky/stupid.

You need a certificate to be certain that it is matching. I would estimate that it is likely the original engine, or at least close to it.

Researching Paint codes and Engine Build numbers
You are FAST Dave.
I will add the following.
The VIN decodes as:
911, 2(year-1972), 5 (ROW T),3175 (sequential number)
The engine decodes as:
6 (6 cyl), 5 (ROW carbureted engine), 2 (MY=1972), 3175 (sequential number)
So, as Dave said the engine number is in the range and type for a ROW '72 T. The only way to know for sure if it's THE engine that came with the car is to contact Porsche.

therossatron, you don't need to actually order the COA from Porsche. You can phone them and ask for the info. It will take a few days but it doesn't cost anything. If you want a printed copy it will cost you.
Yes, they will confirm over the phone most items or questions you might have including colors etc.
