    901 or 911

I got into a discussion with some one about Seinfeld's car 300049. Is it the first 911 or a 901?

The first 911 was built on november 10 with car number 300049, so yes - he has the first 911, but that does not mean there are no 901's with a higher number. For example, on november 5 1964 two 901-cars were produced with the numbers 300074 and 300079. This is because production in those days was not exactly chronologically (is that an english word?)

Thanks Erik. So what makes it the first 911 if 901 cars were made after it? Is it that everything made on or after November 10th are 911's. And are '64 MY cars 901's or 911's or does that matter, or is it just the date of November 10th? Just trying to understand.

I thought there were no '64 MY cars, only a handful (232(?) of '65 MY cars produced in the end of '64, just like every year since.

Seinfelds #49 was the first '911' after Porsche had to give up '901'.

Like Erik says were cars not produced in sequential order. So despite their higher VIN were they produced before #49 and were they actually 901's

To me personal there are 901's, all 901 cars produced before #49 and there are 64 911s .

Basically the same car, the only difference were they produced before or after Porsche gave up 901.

    Just my $.02

    Hello John,

It was just a decision that was taken since Peugeot had the veto on the typenumbers with a zero in the middle. There has never been found an official protest by Peugeot, but it was just decided that all cars produced from November 10th were called 911 instead of 911. So the date is decisive and not a certain production-number. Btw: not one car was officially sold with 901-signs - they all went back to the factory (the few that were sold to factoryworkers etc) and rebadged as 911-cars.

Funny detail: Peugeot didn't have a thing against the 904 presumably, because that one was not rebadges. The fact that this was not a production car was probably reason enough for Peugeot to let this go by - the same goes for the 906, 907, 908 and 909 that followed after that...
