Does anyone know 1972 911S Coupe type number??

    Hello everyone,

I was just looking at some peoples posts regarding orignal 1972 or 1973 Porsche price guides and there is a section that says "type" in the guide. For example in the price guide it shows a 1973 T targa with a type number: 911.211 and a 73 T coupe as 911.111. Based on the maintenance booklets with the Type, VIN, and engine numbers that came with my cars the 73 T targa I owned was 911.214 and the 73 T coupe was 911.114. Only the last numbers are different. Did those numbers change based on where the car was sold? Just curious.

Does anyone know what the type number would be for a 1972 S coupe?

    Have a Happy 4th!!!!!!

911230 +72S coupe. The numbers you quote don't correspond to the years.

I believe that you are referring to the 6 digit car type #'s, all prefixed with 911. The last 3 digits break down the model & trim levels.

those TYPE numbers were a part of the ORDERING system from dealers to the factory brought in, i think, in 1970.
they describe the model type, the body type, the engine type and the gearbox type
i think this is the full list (at least for the period we would be interested in here)

    the first 3 numbers
    model type code
    911 911
    930 930
    924 478
924 932 (dont know what the difference is)
    928 928
928 927 (dont know what the difference is)

the next three numbers in order
    body type
    1 T Coupe
    2 T Targa
    3 E Coupe
    4 E Targa
    5 S coupe
    6 S Targa
    7 Carrera Coupe
    8 Carrera Targa

    engine type
    1 T
    2 E
    3 S
    4 Carrera
    5 Turbo

    Gearbox type
    1 4 Speed
    4 5 Speed
    5 Sportomatic

One thing to note that is important; as Hugh says, the type # is part of the ordering system, and as such it defines a particular bill of materials for the car. That bill of materials defines what equipment is standard on the car. When you see a window sticker it often shows what equipment is standard or no additional cost, and that is the bill of material for that type#. All other equipment is optional or required by country of destination. What this means is that any equipment on your car could be part of the model type #, part of the country requirement, or an extra cost option. Naturally, this could be affected by what was changed at the dealership or by owners along the way.

    932 is a RHD 924 turbo (931 for LHD) and 477 for LHD no-turbo 924
    927 is a RHD 928

That is interesting. At that stage they distinguished between RHD and LHD cars. Something they did not do with the early 911's. Thanks. You lean something about this process and what the factory did every day.
