    Early 911 from Europe

Has anyone out there ever brought an early 911 over from Europe? I understand it has to have original motor to be exempt from all the government red tape. Are these cars looked at any differently and would one need to convert it over to miles or just leave it as Km?
Most interested in any comments that the guys may have. Car in question would be considered a great find.

    Thanks

I imported my 73 from France almost eight years ago. While expensive, (about $7000) it was pretty straightforward and my car did not have the original motor that is came with from the factory. The seller and I agreed on an importer who had experience in the process and all I had to do was wait. It took about 7 weeks for the car to arrive in Long Beach where I picked it up at customs. That was the most interesting part of the process; I had to "tip" the customs agent $100 in order for my appointment time to be recognized and the container that my car traveled in was opened while I watched. The toughest hurdle was at CA DMV which supposedly requires each imported car to have a VIN sticker in the door jam and two VIN plates. My car has no VIN plate on the A pillar and no VIN sticker. Luckily, I was able to charm the DMV agent and convince her that the VIN stamped in the trunk in front of the smugglers box was the only way these fancy old Porsche's came and should satisfiy the requirement for two VIN plates. They did charge me a "use" fee (or something like that) which was the equalivent of sales tax. CA doesn't miss too many revenue opportunities; I'm sure it's even more true today. PM me if you'd like the name of the importer I used, I have them in my files.

My 72 911T coupe was brought in from Germany years ago by a PO. Still has a Germany PCA sticker in the window. Not sure what the admin process was for him to bring it in.

Re VINs, a very nice, factory-looking VIN tag is affixed to the dash on the driver's side, rather than on the A-pillar as you would see on a US car.

    Hello,

I could check out the car for you if it's not too far from the Netherlands. Just found my own 'great find' - and would like to help you achieving that too.

Let me know when you need help!
