    Recommendations about 74-77 Carrera

    Hey everyone,

I've been bitten by the porsche bug for as long as I can remember, but only recently have I started to truly appreciate the earlier years. I am truly a novice in the matter, and having been burned recently in the purchase of a 912 SWT, really want to be careful about the authenticity of what I am buying. Obviously a PPI would take place.

I was looking at '74-'77 Carrera models, and would appreciate any assistance/ thoughts about those cars. I noticed '74 models sported a duck tail, with some '75 and later models I have looked at sporting a whale tail. I have attached pics of a '74 I am looking at, and the lettering on the deck lid does not seem to mirror that of other '74s. Could this not be an original lid?
Also, what would be a fair price for '74?

Thanks. I appreciate all the help.

Never go by what the car looks like, bodywork and graphics are a simple (and very common) change taken by owners in the past. There are probably 3 times as many Carrera's now than were originally made. SO, what is the VIN, that will tell you a lot. A Euro Carrera and a US Carrera can be two different things. The latter usually has a 911S engine. What is the engine serial & type #'s; this will tell you what it WAS, but may not be what it IS internally. Learn what the Carrera was in the period before you make a leap of faith. Tails? A few factory versions, and tons of aftermarket replicas.

Really determine which model you are looking for as their is a HUGE difference in their value:

ROW 74-75 Carrera came with a MFI 2.7 same spec as a 73 RS and their values are about triple + that of a comparable qualityUS Carrera.
US 74-75 Carrera are mechanically identical to a US 74-75 911/911S and while a very neat mid-year they are nowhere near the car above.

Both version are collectible, it just depends on what you want to spend. Most people will pay slightly more for a 74 which features the ducktail vs. a 75 which features the first year of "whale tail" as the are sometimes called. There are lots of good resources on both of these cars.

Whatever version you buy make sure you verify its authentic and numbers matching if you expect it to appreciate. Lots and lots of clones out there, not bad if you want a driver and dont want to spend huge $$, just don't get burned paying Carrera money for one. Documentation, numbers matching and original/correct are the name of the game.

    Good luck in your search.

I seem to recall seeing this car maybe for sale on eBay or Pelican. Is that correct?

If its a US Carrera, I have seen most go for under $50k, but of course prices now are all over the map. I haven't seen any Euro cars go for less than $100+.
My personal favorite is the '74, for the ducktail and fewer mechanical issues than later cars. You will get very good advice here, and a PPI is highly recommended. Good luck.

Don't forget the '76 2.7 MFI ROW, we want to be appreciated too.

Actually not entirely true. The difference between the US and ROW cars is only the engine, with the MFI 911/83 engine in the ROW car. The chassis/brakes/suspension in the US car is the same as the ROW car.

Since the title mentions carrera from 74/77, what about the 76/77 carrera 3.0
The last of the real carrera's since the 911SC became a one model 911 line up.

Good point. I once found the below website, and it helped me learn the little bit that I know about these. I saw one for sales - I think in Florida - in the past 6 months or so. Was priced similar to a 2.7 US Carrera.
