    73S - 4 speed or 5 speed?

Is there a way to determine from the transmission case and or serial number if it is a 4 or 5 speed? Fortunately the COA I received from Porsche yesterday confirms all of my numbers match, but the options listing did not include mention of the optional 5-speed where they seem to have the other options correct. Did the 5-speed become standard at some build point? (car was purchased apart, but the shift knob does have the 5-speed pattern...just looking to under stand the lack of mention on the COA option list and if there is an external way to determine). Thank you!

You can tell if the number has not been ground off ( like so many due to where it is stamped).
It is a 7 number serial number. The first will be a 7 for 6 cylinder. The second number will tell you if a 4 or 5 speed. The third will be a 3 for 1973 and the last 4 the sequential numbers
If the second number is a 1, 3, 7, or 8 it will be a 5 speed. If it is a 2 it will be a 4 speed. If it is a 4 or 6 it is a sporto.

The transmission number provided by the CoA is 338182. Can you help guide me where this number is stamped on the case?? Thanks!

The COA often leaves out the first number (7) as all the 6 cylinder cars start with that. So 3 3 are he second and third numbers on the box. As mentioned above the 3 is a five speed and the second 3 for 1973.
The number is stamped on the lowest part on the case when installed near the oil plug. I will post a photo of mine shortly. However as it is on a low spot it is easily ground off over time.

Hugh - thank you again - most helpful. I have the trans sitting on a dolly so that explains why I could not find the number...will flip it on its side this evening and take a look!
