    68 S Technical Questions

    Hi All

I have a 68 S engine I'll be cleaning up, it currently has a black engine shroud... is this correct for the year or should it be red like LWB cars?

Also need to know what the thread size and pitch is on the earth stud by the gearbox... definitely not 8x1.25mm like the front one by the battery

The ground stud is supposed to be 8mm x 1.25, don't know what you have, but it has always been that size.

Bizarre. I've tried all the nuts I have with no success. My callipers read 7mm, and the 8x1.25 die slips down the post. Not sure what to do other than chase a new M6 thread onto the stud. The joys of old cars

I'll bet that stud has been reduced in size by that old devil rust, ie. eaten away to a smaller diameter. I'd weld a fresh bolt to a washer then weld (or braze) the washer to the bulkhead after removing the original. I think I'd want the larger size to ensure good tight grounding.

When shopping for a correct red shroud, remember there was no channel to the oil cooler on the early cars

Some sanding finds the red shroud underneath... I don't know why a PO painted it black? Not sure I'll be able to remove the black paint without damaging the original red. I have a later red shroud with the air channel to the cooler and will use it I think as the car will be used for historic racing. I think I need to source the cone that goes on the alternator as it doesn't have the fins riveted on the shroud like early versions.

Another query... will turbo tie-rods fit up to a SWB front end? I'd prefer to use these over the early units, but the Pelican units are marked for 69>
