Can anyone tell me why some - but seemingly not all - 73's have an engine lid ground strap? The strap is bolted to one of the upper hinge-to-lid bolts (left side) down the hinge to the lower bolt that secures the hinge to the body?

Maybe part of the radio kit, although I didn't know that not all cars had it.

In viewing several original 73 cars at the recent Parade, this was where I first learned that some had the strap, and others did not. Your suggestion of it being part of the radio package makes sense - perhaps those with factory installed radios had it, and those installed by the dealer or owner did not.
Some probably were lost by the body shop Philistines!
The license lights HAVE to have a ground, and the boys in Zuff.....wouldn't leave it to just the hinge (grease and all)

There was also the option of radio harness preinstall with no radio. I always thought this just included the antenna and the speaker but maybe included additional items like interference filters.

Oops! That's right....just installed a lid on a '70s. It had the license harness ground AND two braided ground straps from the hinge bolts to the hinge pivot bolts. No rear wiper, just license lights. Hmmmm?

NO, I do not know the correct answer to this, but considering that anything attached to the lid, license lights, rear wiper, and trouble light all have their own grounds. So my best guess is they were trying to ensure no radio static from high tension ignition sources, and which is why they put condensers all over the place on alternator connections. Now remember, these guys were building ICBMs when the rest of the world was just getting past biplanes So that's my story and I'm sticking to it until proven wrong!!

Could it also have anything to do with some S cars having alloy lids?
