    Natural Fiber Glass Engine Shroud ???

    It's down to personal preference but Damon Josz (Series 900 in NH) is up there with the best.

    Are the differences in the shrouds enough to require looking for year-specific parts? I have a green-shroud 2.7 in my '66 912 bastard project and I'd love to have something that looks a little less... green...

    Oh, and I just noticed that this is my very first post on this forum- sorry I didn't introduce myself properly! I'm Curt, I have a converted '66 912, and I've been Porsche-afflicted for nearly 10-years...

    Welcome to the Registry.

    These shrouds are made of fiberglass, just like a fender on a Corvette and can be treated and finished in the same manner using similar techniques and products.

    When I installed my 3.0 liter motor in my '70 911T i had the gent who painted my car do the shroud simultaneously in some Guards Red I had left over from a previous Porsche I owned. He sanded it smooth to 400 grit, primed it, applied a couple of small dabs of plastic ti fill some imperfections and pits and sprayed it. I would suggest using your present shroud, do the same thing I described above using whatever color you like, and while it's at the painter spend a little time on the fins of the cylinders cleaning any schmutz and dreck out of there to help cooling.

    The smooth, painted surface looks a lot cleaner and is much easier to wax and keep pristine than the coarse factory finish........and since you're already referring to it as your bastard, you're not harming authenticity.

    I think he is looking for a shroud similar to the race cars. Basically a translucent shroud with no pigment.

    Bill Harris makes excellent 908/910/917 style engine glass and is reasonable in price. Plus, he's a heck of a nice guy. Highly recommended.

    Posting this photo of Damon's work

    While at Rennsport 2 in Daytona (yikes that was 10 years ago) I was stopped dead in my tracks by this display. It's part of the line of fiberglass engine shrouds that Damon had constructed. The very favorite was the different shades of the clear, fresh from the factory clear, ... or factory pink ..... or slight aged racing tan... or even more aged racing tan. Note the comparison on the stacked carb covers (center left in the photo).

    He would make them in what ever state of color you would need for your build.
