If I saw 4 or 5 layers of paint on an deck lid, it would pretty much legitimize it as being original. Reproductions haven't been around long enough to acquire that kind of evidence. Good luck with the sale Bob, and welcome to the Early 911S Registry.

Jens and Cliff, Thanks, nice to get actual helpful info on this lid, compared to other sites where guys email me ranting about cost vs. weight savings, and even a guy who accused me of trying to sell what is "really a steel" hood.
Even enlarging the last photo, I hard pressed to see any difference in the center brace, though. Could you let me know what you're seeing? Also, I read somewhere that the hole on the inside frame, to the right, was for the wires to the license plate lights and would probably not, or is not, on the newer reproductions.
Thanks in advance, and for the info guys,
    Bob

I think that Cliff doesn't see the hole in your center brace ... it's difficult to see in your photos but it's there.

Looks like you're selling the real McCoy. I've got a repop on a client's car next door. I'll go check for the license plate light wiring hole, but I'm pretty sure it's there.

SWB cars still had the last 3 digits of the serial of the car embossed on the hood, fenders, doors and deck lid. I'd have to agree with the experts that it's real. The knock-offs have not been around long enough and who in the hell would go to the trouble to shoot paint and remove it to give it "patina". Priced fairly.

Sorry to hijack but, Tom, where is the number stamped on hoods?

From pictures I've seen, as Tom has said, the numbers were put on the back of the center brace, near the latch post, IIRC. Again, I no expert.
I am happy to report that this deck lid will be going back on a 911S owned by a member here, but I'll let him decide if he wants to report.
Oh, did find out another piece of my puzzle, and that was whether this lid was original to my 912E. I guess if you ordered the aluminum lid, the back license panel was also aluminum, and since mine is steel, probably the lid was just added on sometime during its hard life.
Glad to see it get back on the road.
Thanks to all for the informative conversation.

You keep saying 912E ... but you are now saying "back panel" which is clearly not a 1976 part. What year is your 912?

Also, the reproduction aluminum lid I have here DOES NOT have the hole for the license plate wire harness, although it does have the license plate light holes.

    Number-stamping of Lids

I've actually got a poll going on just this topic . . .

Any numbers stamped on a lid will appear on the center-support bracket, just above the latch. These numbers will match the last two digits of the production numbers on Karmann-built cars. My alu lid is stamped and came from a 911E

Karmann seems to've continued the practice of stamping the doors + panels of the cars it produced up through '71? --- and a sure-fire way to tell if any Karmann-built car has its original bodywork

Exactly, mr9146. I do faintly see the slotted area fading into the inner deck lid. Looks to be real to me too!
