    Tire Decision - Need Input...

SO I have read the threads and done the searches, but I do not find as much feedback (at least recently) as I would like.

    I am running 7 & 8 in x 15 Fuchs. I currently have Yoko A048s (205 and 225 x 50s) but was never all that happy with them. I am running a 73 with RS flares and a 3.2L.

When I can figure out how to post it I will post a table of info I pulled from the tire source that seems to have the best selection for 15 inch wheels and these cars and I thought I would pass it on as a current point in time reference for others that may be making this decision .

I want a tire mostly for track days but also a tire that is acceptable for driving on the road. It seems that the only choices are the Yoko A048s, Toyo R888 and Toyo RA1s. Other potential options are really ONLY track tires and don't have tread for wet weather road driving which I want to protect for. Besides not liking the Yokos all that much they are also 45% or so more $$$.

So - Does anyone have some comment and experience with Toyo RA1s? I have found some good commentary on the R888s but not the RA1s.

So I think I found a way to post this data...

I think most of it is self explanatory, the TREAD rating on the right is my assessment of the tread pattern when looking at pictures of the tires and as I said above, I am looking for something that is good for both track and road but leaning toward the track.

So my question again is... can anybody share some experience with the Toyo RA1s?

Everyone here seems to LOVE the RA-1. The R888 is mixed reviews. Most like the RA-1 much better. It has proven to be the standard R compound to get. Maybe the Kumho V710 is faster though.

Motogman, I used RA1s for a number of years in a drive to track, track all weekend and drive home mode. Later I used them as wets with Hoosier's as drys. Subjective and qualified comments follow:

In my view RA1s are a great R compound tire...very stable at the limit, consistent, and with the added bonus that grip seems to increase stably with usage right up until the tires cord. I ran them on the street at -0.5 degrees camber and on track at -2 degrees or more. My car was carefully set up (by others) so that I had fairly even wear, and I was impressed at just how long they would last as street/track tires, typically 12 to a maximum of 15,000 kilometres until they corded, depending on the amount of track usage. Finally, setting tire pressure was straight forward.

My use of R888s has been more problematic on the track. I am having trouble setting the correct tire pressure and on my first set noticed that grip reduced with wear. I am also having problems with consistency and grip near the limit which had lead to some uncomfortable moments. I have another set of R888s now, either I make sense of them or I will revert to RA1s.

Others on this site may have had more recent experience with the R888s and would welcome their views.

If you need 225/50-15 then go with the RA1. If you need more tread and can live with 205/50-15 all around go with the Dunlop Direzza II.

I've used or driven on pretty much every tire on that list. The R888 would be near the bottom IMO. The AO48s are not that bad but very sensitive to tire pressure changes.

Does anyone have any feedback on the Yoko Advan tires?

Would any RA1's fit on stock 6 x 15 Fuchs rims "properly"?

The Yokohama AO48 is an "Advan". Yokohama Advan AO48 is the full name. I run 205/55-16 and 225-50-26 on my 16x7&8 Fuchs. They seem fine in the canyons but I don't have much to compare them to. I use the M compound front, MH rear to try to even out the tire wear but the fronts last at least 1.5 times as long as the rears. That will probably only get more unbalanced now that I put the stiffer rear torsion bars in. Wear is pretty even across the tread, though. I am embarassed to admit I don't know what pressures I am running. I think it was 26psi front and 28psi rear cold. They only rose about 2psi after a spirited canyon drive.

Two solid choices are the BF's the Rival in a 205/50/15 is a great choice that has gained a huge following. For a street tire you will not find
better grip but noise feedback is low. Somewhat similar to a R comp. If you want for R -Comp the BF R1 fits your bill 205 and a 225 available.
I use them on my 71 in 205 all around on 15x7's. Solid grip a durable. Durable being a relative term

In terms of street tire with track use the RS-3 Hankook is my fav but the sizes are off for the 911

    Cheers

Are your 205's 50 series? Could you post a pic of your 71 with the 7's all the way around? I need to buy four tires for some 7" Fuchs soon. I have standard fender lips. Thanks
