    Monterey early 911 auction results.

    Hello,

    Post your auction results here.

    As I write this its Friday evening and RM just sold a 72 S Targa. It was a color change. Driver condition. Maybe a 3 with a 1 being a perfect car. The motor was increased to a 2.7. Not sure if it was matching. Price NOT including buyers premium was $93k (If I heard correctly)

    RM shortly there after failed to sell what appears to be a nice 73 couple. That car was nicer vs the black targa. Did not sell at $110.

    The higher end sales will be tomorrow evening. Gooding, Russo and Steele and Gooding all have what appear to be very nice early 911s that will sell Saturday evening. Of all the auctions we visited Mecum seemed to have the largest number of early cars for sale. It was very being at RM and watching an early 911 roll up on stage shortly after a 8 million dollar Ferrari...

    Weather report: Loads of Europeans. More than I remembered seeing in all the previous years we have attended. Germans were all over the Porsches. Thus far prices are strong for everything. No bargains to be had. We watched a rather doggy mid 80s 930 Turbo sell with buyers premium for $36k! Russo and Steele has several mid year cars (one previous owned by Al Holbert) hitting the block tomorrow....

    More to come..

    We were at the RM auction last nite and the Gemini blue coupe needed a lot to be brought up to a decent standard. There is a white RS coming up for auction tonight and that one also has a lot of work to be done to get it right.

    I was at Bonhams Quail auction yesterday. The '70 2.2 S and the '70 "S/T" were both no-sales. I suspect that the reserve on the S was over-aggressive for the condition. An apparently nice '70 T (I didn't look at it closely) sold for $44K including premium.

    I've attended this auction several times, including last year. I've never seen it so packed with people, all of them with money to spend, many of them European. There were some very strong results for the better cars on offer.

    I expect this to be a pretty long thread, covering several venues + all kinds o' cars, so . . .

    I'm gonna put up what I can on Our Cars that I come across --- VIN + etc . . . then update any prices as they come up . . . for future reference

    VIN = 9110300331
    Eng# = 6300487
    Trans# = ?

    RM's desc . . .

    . . . It would be difficult to find a nicer 1970 Porsche 911 S than the example presented here, the 331st of only 1,744 built for the 1970 model year. Fewer than 400 are said to have been delivered to the U.S., where they bore a base price of $8,750. It was discovered by the consignor complete and undamaged in a North Carolina garage, where it remained for 20 years. Soon after purchase, it was completely stripped to a bare tub and rebuilt to factory specifications over a two-year period by a renowned marque specialist. The work included a high-quality repaint in the car’s original 415 Sepia Brown, while the suspension and other components were powder-coated. The interior was also renewed with factory materials in its original russet tan and black. All rubber components were replaced with new ones, the aluminum trim was polished, and the original tinted glass was reinstalled . . .

    . . . Mechanically, the original, matching-numbers, 2,195-cubic centimeter Type 911/02 flat-six engine and Type 911/01 transaxle were completely overhauled, and the engine compartment was detailed to its factory appearance. The 6x15 Fuchs forged alloy wheels were polished and repainted, and suspension parts, such as the shock absorbers, tie-rod ends, ball joints, and bushings, were replaced, as needed, with correct new parts . . .

    . . . This fine example of a highly sought-after model is supplied with its correct spare tire and wheel, tool kit, owner’s manual, and factory-issued Certificate of Authenticity . . .

    ADDENDUM
    Please note that contrary to the catalogue, the estimate for this vehicle is $130,000 - $160,000 . . .

    9112310026

    VIN = 9112310026
    Eng# = 6320066
    Trans# =

    From RM's description . . .

    . . . Originally sold new in California, this very attractive 1972 911 S Targa features an engine upgraded to 2.7 Carrera RS specification, but still retains its original E-series “narrow body” appearance. The original engine was modified to 2.7 RS specifications by S-Car-Go Racing, of San Rafael, California, in February 2004 (invoices supplied), with correct, new 90-millimeter Mahle pistons and cylinders. With other internal and external modifications, this engine would yield a potent 210 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 202 foot-pounds of torque at 5100 rpm, a substantial improvement over the original stock, lower-compression, 2.4-liter variant. The transmission was also overhauled at that time . . .

    . . . Its chassis number, 9112310026, reveals that it was the 26th of only 989 U.S.-spec 911 S Targas produced for the 1972 model year. This Targa left the factory wearing special-order Silver Metallic paint; however, the car was subsequently given a high-quality repaint in black. Factory sports seats with Black Watch tartan fabric inserts highlight the black interior, along with charcoal Perlon carpeting. It is described by the consignor as being in very nice overall condition, having recorded just 128,000 original miles. He further states that this car has never been track-raced and has enjoyed regular servicing and maintenance throughout its life. It comes with full instrumentation, a stainless steel Monty exhaust, and a Wevo gear shift, as well as the owner’s manual and tool kit, which includes a jack . . .

    ADDENDUM
    Please note that an import duty of 2.5% of the purchase price is payable on this car if the buyer is a resident of the United States . . .

    9113300038

    VIN = 9113300038
    Eng# = 6330073
    Trans# = 330275

    From RM's description . . .

    . . . This 911 S Coupe is an early example of the 1973 F-series, built on Porsche’s legendary unitized body and fitted with an electric sunroof at the factory. It also includes Porsche’s competition-oriented M409 Sport Seat option, complete instrumentation, rack-and-pinion steering, and forged alloy Fuchs 6x15-inch wheels. The owner, a long-time Porsche enthusiast and vintage Porsche racer, states that this car was acquired in restored and excellent condition. It retains its original floor panels and matching-numbers engine and transmission. Also included are its original tool kit, jack, owner’s manual, and Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity. After it was purchased by the consignor, it was left with a marque expert, RennGruppe Motorsports in Lexington, North Carolina, for some minor work, which brought it to its present outstanding condition . . .

    . . . Finished in its original Special Order 335 Gemini Metallic paint, it also sports a stunning black leatherette interior, with the seats trimmed with attractive black-and-white hounds-tooth cloth inserts. With a dry weight of just over 2,500 pounds, lots of power, and large disc brakes at all four corners, the 2.4-liter 911 S delivers a great driving experience with terrific (140 mph-plus) performance, comfort, and good looks, making it perfect for rapid touring or club events. A 22.4-gallon gas tank allows long runs between fuel stops. Relatively few of these S Coupes were produced in 1973; just 1,430 were made in total, and only 524 of those were designated for the U.S. market. Their relative scarcity means these models are always in demand by knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts, and this example presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the best . . .

    Please note that contrary to the catalogue, the estimate for this vehicle is $150,000 - $180,000 . . .

    It seems the europeans are more accepting of an upgraded motor (2.4E to 2.7RS) than domestic buyers. As long as appearances are the same and it is done as per factory.
