    charging issue...alternator or voltage regulator

I just installed the alternator after an engine rebuild. problem is it's not producing enough voltage. The red warning light in the dash glows slightly when off idle telling me the car is consuming more power then it is creating. The light goes out when ideling. I had the alternator rebuilt a while ago and replaced the voltage regulator at the same time.

So, how do I tell if its an alternator problem or voltage regulator problem? The voltage regulator is separate from the alternator.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris
