    H4/H1 headlamp housings...installation question

My apart 73 S came with three sets of lamps - the sealed beam housings and lamps; a pair of H4s, and a pair of H1s. I took a break from more meaningful work on the car today and was chasing the threads on the headlamp bucket mounting tab holes, and I came away perplexed how the H4s or H1s install. The long mounting/adjusting screws are at such a severe angle towards the lamp housings and therefore a seemingly impossible distance away from the mounting tab holes. Unlike the sealed beam housings which install first, then the lamp, then the trim ring, the H4s or H1s would seem to install with everything assembled as one unit but that just further confuses me. Yes, I'm embarrassed at the simplicity of my question.

I just checked the Haynes manual...if I am reading it correctly, it seems the H1 and H4 lamps are held onto the fender lamp bucket by just the bottom 5mm screw (assume as tightened, it draws down the lamp assembly where it fits in the groove of the fender at the 12 o'clock position. The long screws do not find their way into the mounting tabs on the headlamp bucket which is what had me confused. The mounting tabs at the 10, 2, 4 and 8 positions are not used with the H1 and H4 units...just the sealed beam housing. Do I have this correct?

Yes. Bezel hooks on at 12 oclock, screw at 6 secures it. Gasket puts a little tension on the assembly so it doesn't rattle. Only real challenge is rotating it just right to get the screw in.

And everything must fit tight or the headlight can fall out, with only two mounting points. I've had to bend the Bezel hook to make them fit correctly.

Thank you both for confirming the assembly. I don't recall seeing a 'gasket' on either the H4 of H1 assemblies...or is it a gasket that surrounds the headlamp opening?

Yes, there's a gasket. And you can bend the mounting tabs if they're in the way.

The mounting tabs should not interfere with the H4 assembly. Make sure the headlight is well hooked into the top latch, if not it can pop out. You might want to safety wire or zip tie your headlight assembly to one of the tabs or to the bolt at the back of the headlight hole. This will save your headlight from being destroyed if it ever pops out.
