Looking for a recommendation on a Chicago area shop to do a full restoration on a '72 911S which is complete and with the same owner (2nd) since 1978. Body, paint, mechanicals, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you thought about Aaron at Flat Six Inc in Minneapolis? He's done a few really nice restorations that were from the Chicago area. I think he does pickup and delivery.

Thanks guys, but I think the owner wants to have a cup of coffee and watch the progress. Keep'em coming.

I can't vouch for them but they seem pretty competent.

Thanks Kris. I do work for people in Chicago but until I find some good help, I'm probably a year out on resto work.

Any resto shop that has a Camaro on the home page would turn me off instantly.
Consider Cooper if he is dead set on staying in Chicago. I have no personal experience with my cars but, go check out the shop, you will be very impressed. They have done a number of classic Porsches in the past, including a couple of '73 Carreras.

Mike,
Custom Cars did the body work and touch up paint on the '73 911S in April/May of this year. The work was very good--they were able to pound out the dents, the paint match was excellent, and they were very accommodating. Pat Y. referred me to them; that's a very strong recommendation. And, they work on David MacNeil's cars. Give them a call, and make an appointment to tour the shop. If you are at the Geneva Concours this weekend, stop by and we can discuss their work.

The reason I mentioned Cooper was that they were the first ones to offer absolute reproduction of RS race seats. They bought the factory molds back in the 90's. I think it really depends on your budget. I think that limiting yourself geographically because you want to sit and have a coffee is shortsighted. There are several very, very good shops. One of the ones I can personally vouch for is right here in San Antonio. Jones Autowerkes. They have done numerous extraordinary restorations an have been at it for over 40 years. I've seen at least 5 356 Carreras, at least the same RS's lots of S's T's go out of their shop. All have been concours winners. They are doing a Conda green RS right now and that is the 3d they've done for the same owner.
They took my 73S down to the bare chassis back in 83. I'd put them up against any of the West Coast experts. Probably less money than out there too.
