    Correct aerial for 1966 coupe

    Hi

I want to replace the 1973 or so aerial that is on my car with one that is the same as it left the factory with. I am assuming that it will be a Hirschmann? Can anyone give me the correct details (part number, etc) and whether they are still available new or should I trawl around for one?

Also, do I have to remove the driver's door to fit the new aerial? Any hints or tips on how to make the job easier than I think it will be are gratefully received!

    Many thanks

    Stephen

It's been my experience that you can find Hirschmans that are close, but not as long as the originals. There would have been a bracing mount down near the bottom of the antenna, the new one won't reach that same position. I use a suitable tubing size to extend the mast down to the position of the original one. Of course none of this can be (easily) done with the door on. I use the factory tool to remove the hinge pins to get the door off. You DO NOT want to unbolt the hinges.

    Stephen,

I just went through this, taking mine out to clean. I had to take the door off...

And do what Ed said about removing the hinge pins.

Thanks Ed and John... is it easy to remove the door without the factory tool?

I had to remove the door on my 72 to install the antenna.

Not really, I had tried various methods years ago, then 25 years ago bought the factory slide hammer tool, no comparison. This not to say that I wasn't able to do so with more generic tools like from Snap-On and Mac, but they're difficult to use especially if the pins are really tight. However they still beat unbolting the hinges!

Thanks for the photos, Eric and John. The one I was going to use does not have the tall black cover that both of yours have: seems like I'll search out the correct one before taking the door off!
