What is the going rate for a good running 996 motor, or a core for that matter?

    Rick,

Running 3.4 or 3.6 cores range from 6k-8k, depending on mileage, cond, and seller. Buying one of these used is much like buying a hand grenade with a pulled pin. It's not if there's going to be a boom, it's when.
    Cores generally range from 2k-4k.

Properly rebuilt engines run 11-16k. 11k gets you a "stock" rebuild with upgraded IMS on a good used block, 16k gets you increased displacement using LN Engineering re-sleeved block with new JE pistons. We stock 3.4/3.6 and 3.6/3.8 long blocks ready to go.

    Tony,

We have tons of cores. Email me what you're thinking.

Just yesterday I passed on a 99 Carrera rollover. I know the day is coming when I have to work on these and I was going to buy it for training purposes. RR suspension was torn off so it wouldn't roll. To much of a hassle to deal with.

Porsche's troubled children for sure; at least the 996 series has some redeemable value.

    Boxsters? 944's spawn.

Have a complete '01 GT3 Cup motor available if someone wants to go that way.

There not that bad to work on the biggest issue to overcome is the diagnostic tool we use Autologic here it will do programming & keys etc. I refuse to lease my life away to Porsche for the right to use a PIWIS tool....

Frank email sent with what I have cooking.

It terrifies me that these discussions have become commonplace.

Real world failure rates on the 996/986 engines is 4-8% by actual legal discovery -- because there was a class action suit. I've owned a couple 986s with no issues, and also have a 996-owning friend whose engine was destroyed by a failed IMS bearing. Discussing this stuff is a bit like discussing Area 51. Everyone has an opinion. Mine is that I'd be far more likely to install a factory bearing if I were doing preventative work than an aftermarket part that has not had the rigorous and widespread testing the factory part has.

    HA! You're so cute.

Better parts is better parts, rigorous testing [read: extensive failure] be damned.
