Randy, I make the plug wire sets because there aren't any aftermarket ones that I like. I solder the brass ends on for the distributor cap end. The store bought crimp on ends are a bad connection waiting to happen, in fact we just ran across that again not three hours ago on a 914/4 with crimp on ends. Porsche soldered on the ends on 356's and early 911's ,,,,they knew what they were doing!

Randy, all of my reading is that the braid-covered wires were for the CIS cars, not for MFI. They were supposed to address the exploding airbox problem. What did you decide to do?

I've got a 73.5 CIS car and have been trying to debug a miss that I think I've tracked down to ignition wires. I've improved it somewhat with replacing some plug connectors, but I ran the motor in the dark and could see the light show around the distributor cap. The braid-covered wires look like they've been there awhile, so I've decided to buy a new wire set. However, I've been trying to decide whether to replace with braided or no. I've read a good deal of comments here and on Pelican, but the evidence for both positions is anecdotal or circumstantial (please, no flames -- that's my reading).

Ed, what would you do in my position, braided or no? Just curious.

The outer braided jackets are there to suppress the radio frequency emissions from the wires that would interfere with the in-car radio (the sound system kind).

The braided wires were what Porsche thought might be cross firing blowing air boxes, that wasn't really the case, the blown air box problem pretty much went away with the later air box fuel distribution tubes, which got the fuel spray down into the manifolds instead of the plastic plenum. Use them for originality if that's what you like.

    Thanks, Ed. Sounds reasonable.
