    '69E Paint and undercoating questions

    Hi all-

We're getting ready for final primer, paint and undercoating on the '69E. A few questions for the experts here:
    - I was planning on primer, SKS and then Rustolium satin black on engine compartment, trunk and underside. Is this right? (This is what I did on the Roadster and it's held up well)
    - Dash is flat black I think, what finish? Flat, satin?
    - Same black on hinges?
    - middle of trunk lid is under coated and then painted body color?
    - no under coating on engine lid, correct?

Any other suggestions? Undercoat roof? Inside doors?

    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Cheers,

    Ron

As per my very original '69 Karmann T:

Agree with your plan for trunk/underside. Side note, The newer aerosol Rustoleum products are not very durable...VOC constraints most likely. Old school brush on is tough stuff. If you're planning on spraying consider the VHT epoxy in satin black, much tougher than new Rustoleum.

Dash is satin, not flat...they age to flat which raised the question, but originally satin.

    Satin hinges, yes

Trunk inside reinforcement, SKS and body color

Engine lid is just body color, no ripply stuff!

Roof got a glued pad, and doors were naked aside from seam sealer.....I would use some SKS inside the bottoms...maybe just a sound pad on the inside of the outer skin...you don't want to loose the "ping!"

Since your car is an E and probably not a Karmann , you should use 3M bodt schutz , it is rougher like the original . Also the underside of the car should not be painted black , only the wheel wells and the areas with body color overspray if you want to duplicate the factory .

Just curious, why would you think this E car is not a Karmann? My 1970 E is a Karmann built in December of 1969.

My mistake . I believe Porsche did not make the E 's until 1971 .So disregard the 3M note .

There were 911E models built and sold in 1969! When they went to the B series in '69 they went with the "plasticized" under coating system, and there is no difference between Karmann and Reutter (Porsche) under coating...Wurth SKS for both. Subtile structural differences, yes, but not undercoating.
