    Bumper Striping? Tape or Paint?

When the trim was removed from stock type bumpers, particularly on race cars, how were the trim holes covered up? I've seen guys use some form of tape on bumpers to do it. Is this what the factory did back in the day or were the bumpers fiber glass or holes filled with the stripes painted on? If it was tape, what sort of tape was used? Pin Striping or vinyl?

On most unrestored race cars from back in the day, you'll see tape. That's what they used... even the Werks cars. Most tidied-up vintage race cars nowadays have either vinyl striping or paint.

I used 1" Gorilla brand tape. It's thicker than vinyl, but holds-up to rocks and sun.

The holes were welded up prior to the application of the tape, or at least that is what I found on my car. Some of these welds have since fallen out on mine and will need replacing but I think you would have seen tell tale signs if they had been left open in the day i.e. the air flow would have deformed the tape to show the outline of the holes.

In these pictures it looks as though the holes are still there under the tape. I would've thought the factory would have left the holes there for the simple reason that welding them up would have added weight (albeit a very insignificant amount) to a car they were doing their best to lighten up in the first place. Not sure but does anybody have any close up front bumper pictures that are taped just to see?

Also bxd, where did you get the vinyl tape from and was it a specific brand? I'm sort of interested in this race look at the moment. I'm not sure if I'm going to go this route but I'm really thinking about it. The nice thing is, if I get tired of it, I can just pull the tape off and reattach the trim.

My car takes a bit more punishment than most, so I used the relatively heavy-duty tape mentioned earlier.... if you want the look, but prefer thinner, vinyl-style stripes, I suggest you ask Bob Tilton for a set - he makes excellent, period-correct reproductions of the bumper stripes, side stripe/logos, and rear deck emblems.
