    Sill question........?

    Hello,

I've been looking at various early 911 cars and noticed some cars have holes along the sill areas and some do not. My particular car which is a 69t has two round holes and an oval hole near towards the door hinge area.

Could some one tell me the difference why, maybe my car has had replacement sills at some point? I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help, please see picture.

    Can anyone help?

I've seen the three holes on 68 SWB cars but don't know if they follow through to LWB cars.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks lee

3 small holes, much closer to the seal mounting lip on a '73 LWB. Mine are definitely original.

    Lee,

The rectangular hole is standard, it usually has a small piece off steel held in place with seam sealer. The new panels don't have this indentation.

I haven't seen the large holes before. But MY69 had S sill trim, maybe it is a rubber sill trim thing?

The S trim is held in with those little plastic rivets, and where fitted you will have small holes only, close to where the door seal fits, as in the photo above.

What I believe were the original outer rockers on my '70 had the same larger round holes you show. My understanding is that these allowed application of cavity wax or whatever minimal rust-proofing the cars got. The little holes shown by NorthernThrux are for holding the inner edge of the aluminum 'S' sill plates down. (OT, but I thought these were supposed to be sheet metal screws - never heard of the plastic rivets Tony mentions.)

In the PET it says sheet metal OR plastic expanding rivet. Often the Carrerra 2.7 numbers apply to the S models for the interior trim, but I'm not sure which was on my car to be honest (it's an S as noted). Numbers below are from the pdf of the PET. I have an original PET binder and will check it too.

    28 900.143.040.02 B2.9x9.5 (20 needed)
    29 999.591.550.40 (72-) CARRERA 2.7 Expansion rivet (20 needed)

In the real PET binder it says

    45 900.145.041.00 Lens head countersunk screw B 3.5 x 16 DIN 7983
    50 999.591.526.40 Plastic rivet for 911S

So it looks like the S and RS used plastic and the rest used sheet metal. Different strokes for different sills.
