    Steering shaft bearing

    Hi all-

I removed the bearing on the steering column because it was rough. Upon removal, I saw why, several of the bearings had fallen out. The part appears to be FAG 6009Z, I'll have to get a magnifying glass or my son to confirm as the stamp is very small. This bearing does not appear in the Stoddard catalog. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to order a replacement? A Google search of FAG 6009Z showed several industrial suppliers, mostly from China.

    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Cheers,

    Ron

Check the ref. I thought they were very hard to come by, and pretty expensives...

Hi Olivier, thank you for the reply. I used a magnifying glass and the number is actually 6003Z. I found one on ebay for $3 shipped. My question was really about the bearing not being in either Stoddard' or Pelican's catalogs. In any case, I'll replace the bearing with the new one and go from there.
    Cheers,

    Ron

Hi, is this the bearing for the 356 or 911? My 1972 911 upper steering column bearing has failed in a similar manner. Pelican has one, but it's close to $300!

    Just to be clear,

Item on the early car is a steel housing with a needle roller bearing pressed in place. There are felt washers either side and then a couple of crude oil seals.

The steel housing was fitted into a rubber sleeve which was located onto the bulkhead using a U Clamp.

The bearing and housing are NLA. The rubber sleeve is still available here in the UK at around $16. Part Number 901-347-223-03

There is an update part which replaces both the rubber sleeve and bearing as a single unit. Part Number 911-347-029-00. These parts are about $65 each.

The part we have made replaces the original Steel bodied housing and needle roller with an Oilite Bush.

I don't think needle rollers (which have a speed rating of 14000rpm) are right for this application and I think an oil impregnated bronze bush is better. We have fitted a pair of R21 Rotary Shaft Seals to keep the bearing clean.

All of the used needle rollers I have seen have had flats on them and been jammed.

price is $40 + $10 shipping to the USA.

The upper shaft bearing is a simple bearing consisting of a pressed steel cup and loose balls held in place with a circular cross section snap ring - really crude.

It is a common fault for the snap ring to move out of place and for the balls top be loose on the track but when the pressed cup is in place the system will still work. They only fall top pieces when they are dismantled.

It should be possible to re-assemble by buying a bag of small ball bearings and sticking them to the track with grease whilst re-fitting the snap ring.

Once it is back in the column it will work OK.

The balls that have fallen into the column are unlikely to jam or cause any damage.

We have just drawn a replacement using a bearing grade polymer (Ertalyte TX) but I don't expect them to be delivered until after the holiday which will last until 6th January over here.
