    72 Targa sans oil door

    Hi,

In my eternal thirst for early 911 technical knowledge, I stumbled upon a '72 T Targa for sale with an empty space where the oil door would normally go. When I asked the dealer selling this particular car "what happened to the oil door?"

He replied "Oh, it didn't come with one."

    :|

When I crossed checked the chassis serial number in the Red Book (worth every penny, btw), I noticed it was the one of the first 800 produced that year.

So, either the dealer is giving me the ol' "It was a rare-special-order-no-oil-door-Porsche" treatment, or at some point in its history, the door was completely welded shut. The dealer has no owner/maintenance records of this car before it entered his possession.

Anyone care to guess what the real story is here? Thanks!

(full disclosure: I'm not interested in the car but wanted to run this by you guys)

I`ve heard of one 72 that was assembled without the classic door. It was an early one, mabe the first one/only one?….Might be a thread here that I saw this info discussed?…http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-oil-flap.html

Could have been whacked in the side and had the quarter panel replaced and the tank moved...highly doubtful, but possible.

    Check for damage...

I viewed a silver, rusty 72T like that in Cleveland 8 yrs ago. Had been hit and 1/4 panel replaced. I passed due to the rust.

I don't know how that thread could be of any help.
All it did for me was make my eyes roll clear to the back of my head.

    Ciao

    Jim,

I deduced that it was probably a patch job by a previous owner at some point to make it look 'more streamlined'.

What really blows my mind is that the original color (gold metallic) was painted over!
