Normal leak down numbers for 2.4S engine

    Hi All,

I am in the process of stripping down my car, and as I am going through it, questions are popping up, and I do have a curious mind

i looked under the rear engine lid and saw these numbers.....guessing these are leak down numbers, so wondering what are the normal numbers for a freshly rebuilt engine as opposed to an older engine or even when is it a good idea to rebuild an engine. I am going to rebuild the engine, at some stage, but i am just curious

These are the numbers as per the picture below, sorry dont have any other numbers
    115 135
    115 130
    120 125

Those are cranking compression numbers, not leak down. The more even the better, in a perfect world they would all be 135. While not great numbers they're not bad enough to warrant a rebuild. Of course you don't know when they were done.

    Thanks edmayo,

And sorry for my ignorance......I will have to look at the engine in due course, but this might be a little indication of possibly rebuilding further down the track. Which might help depending on how i am tracking budget wise, but again i will revisit further down the track.

    thanks again for your help.

I've just done my first ever leak down test on my 1972 2.4T. It took me so long that the engine was pretty cool by the time I finished, so the numbers are probably all over the place. I had particular difficulty getting the hose threaded into cylinder 6, took me 60 mins.

    These are my results:

    1. 26% (6% when retested again at end with colder engine)
    2. 16%
    3. 14% (was very difficult for me to find the dead center for this one, readings varied between 38% and 14%)
    4. 30%
    5. 6%
    6. 16%

All my plugs were very sooty, and the engine is not pulling as strongly as I'd like (mind you, even my 2004 Turbo doesn't do that). I am not entirely confident all the results are accurate, as sometimes the lowest figures were not obtained when the timing marks were aligned on the pulley.

Any recommendations gratefully received on further testing, or should I retest again on a hot engine now that I know how to do it?
