Interesting: a '69T with factory CD ignition...

I've got a '69T in the shop that has what looks to be factory CD ignition. The brackets the box is bolted to are very original looking and on the inner wheel well, behind the relay board....

    Kinda neat.

Cool. You should take the box out and snap some better pics.

Based on your various comments I get the impression that these CDS units are rather rare, and yet page SL21 of the factory service manual (Ist revision,, June 1971) states: "Type 911 vehicles utilize a capacitive discharge (CDS) ignition systems."

I would take that statement to mean that all 911s had CDS. Or does it mean that only 911s produced from June '71 onwards had them?

Or is it a case of these CDS systems becoming relatively rare as they got swapped out over the years?

I'm pleased to say that my 09/69 build '70T has the unit in place (see below). Wish I could say that about my '66 427 Corvette that lost its Transisitorized Ignition (TI) at some point. Replacing the TI in a '66 Vette is a rather expensive undertaking as one of the components is a TI specific distributor along with about another 5 rare components.

BHKZ Ignition Unit AKA CDI Box was an option on the T for 1969 model year cars.

When I purchased my '69 Karmann T from the original owner it had an after market Delta MK 10 CD installed near the distributor.

However, back on the left side of the engine compartment was the original mounting bracket for a Bosch CD box with small frosty plastic plugs in the three mounting holes.

Bosch CD was not standard on Ts in '69....a factory option and standard on E and S models

Seems as though the cars we've seen here that have this option are all Karmann-built and later in the MY '69 production run.

The CDI kit appears in the RS/1 "Repair Sets" section (page 28) of the 1965-1968 swb Parts Catalogue; the individual parts are listed whilst the whole installation is listed as part number 901.602.010.00 - "Adapter kit for the battery-high tension - condenser - ignition system(BOSCH)"
