How firm are your seats ?

Not those seats....the ones in your car

Trying to finish up the reupholstery of my '73 comfort seats over Christmas. I am pretty sure the spring baskets are "tired" and "sproingy". I'd like to get a sense of how much the seat depresses when a normally sized individual sits in them.

    Original thread here. http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...question/page3

Clearly I am a bit behind on this ! Been meaning to do this since March !

    Cheers

Very subjective question and almost impossible to measure. If seats could only talk... (but then we would hear constant whining mostly about smells.)

I can offer this perspective: There is a MARKED difference between sitting on an original seat vs one that a Porsche upholstery guy rebuilds. So much so that I counsel my customers to make that one of their first car handling upgrades. Of the four driver contact points, it is THE most important one, because it influences the other three so much.

To answer your question, my soaking wet 150 lbs plopping onto a good seat makes little difference in its compression.

Thanks guys, Exactly what I was looking for. I've only sat in sports seats for the early cars. The seat I have were purchased second hand to replace the wrong Recaros put in it in the '80s. Firm, like my Cayman, is what I will aim for, even if that is firmer than original. I completely agree, that if the "seat of the pants" connection isn't right, nothing else matters.

Between my four early cars with standard seats there was a marked difference between the firmness of the seats. For the softest pair I ordered the seat reinforcement kit from Lakewell:

I wouldn't say that the seats are 100% back now but they're much better and I'm pleased with the results.

Porsche still makes the spring boxes. $480 Canadian, each, at my local dealer. Think I'll play around some more first !
