Early- ish 911 race car with history

So this is probably a really daft question, but where do the majority of early proper 911 race cars with competition history get sold in North America.Do they all go to auction and if so which one?

I have not been on this side of the pond for long so have no idea where to go looking.

Ideally I am looking for a narrow body 911 with some decent international racing history (ultimate would be Le Mans).

they are very rarely advertised. since most cars already have interested parties signal their commitment or serious interest before it hits the market.
most owners know who is really interested in their car(s). often they are part of a trade.
networking is very important and who is who. low key and patience are key.
