    Correct me if I'm wrong,,,,but weren't steel wheels of that date 4 1/2" width.

    not necessarily. My MY 68 came with 5.5 steelies and left the assembly line 9/4/67. My spare is original, chrome steel 5.5 x 15 and dated 7/67.
