Thread: Why mixed gold-chrome rear deck lid lettering

Why mixed gold-chrome rear deck lid lettering

On this purported original E, of registry fame, with S trim. The cognoscenti have spoken previously that S and E are all gold, T with S trim mixed gold Porsche with chrome 911T, otherwise all chrome on a T without S trim.
    So what is "correct"?

My '71 targa is the same way, "Targa" script in gold along with the "PORSCHE" lettering on the rear lid, but the "911T" emblem is in silver. My understanding is that std. on "T" was silver but if you wanted gold option it did not include the 911T emblem. Funny thing is when I took off the silver 911T emblem it was gold on the backside!

The gold plating on the lettering seems to be much more durable than the plating on the model emblem. I had this issue with my 70 911. Had to replace the model emblem after 10-15 years as it looked silver.

I was observing the cars back in the day and most 911T cars were gold on the lettering and silver on the emblem. I can only remember seeing one all gold. But there are original silver 911S emblem's. but I think was a ordering mistake from the vendor at the time of assembly of the car on the factory line and had to use them anyway to get the cars done. Richard,

All the original engine lid letters should be gold on Ss,Es and T luxes to 2.4s unless special orders - full stop.

1970 914-6 - materialised from the 'Lotto' garage into reality
    1971 2.2 911 S - now back in the UK - sob!
1975 Carrera Targa (ROW) - missed.

    As Dennis, noted:

If a 1969-1771 911T have been ordered with the "Comfort Group" (so called in 1969 Accesories folder USA&RoW) or with "Appearence Group" equipment (so called in 1970-71 Accessories folder USA) it came w all gold letters on the engine grill ("911T" and "Porsche").
For the 911T, the gold lettering was not available individually, only within a package.
For 1969-71 E's and S' this all was standard.

I don't care what is shown in publication because it is wrong a lot of the time, I agree with raspy2point2 above as real life observation does not lie. I believe my '71 Targa was delivered with all gold letters except for the rear "911T" which was silver. Do we have anyone else from back in the day who has observed this, Harvey or Ed. Thx!

I have never seen or heard of an original car with the colors mixed.
I know if I was judging, I would need some verification.
I do know the gold faded quickly sometimes......
Maybe Ed can chime in also.

I myself would love to find a NOS silver 911S badge for my engine lid, I just prefer silver over gold.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
