You mean like this? They are available new as a factory Porsche item from Mittelmotor in Germany.

Well my 71 T with the "comfort" package has the mixed colors. My bet is that is how they came, no, its not something I documented back in 71, but I seem to recall seeing so many that way that it didn't even strike me as odd. Notice that option sheet says "gold lettering" not lettering and numbers. Time to look for period pictures.

There was a problem with the gold plating on the 1971 cars ,widely known at the time they faded quickly to silver.

there are two cars that I can recall had silver 911S badge's. and they were both 1971 cars now that I think about it. So maybe it is more accurate that they faded bad on 71 cars. Chris

    Guys,

Flipping through the pages of the musty old archives, here are some original press pictures from 'the day'.
    The orange one is a '69 E,the 'delivery yard' is also '69 and the 3 x white '2.2s' - actually '69s - as well.
I have others but these are the clearest - any more Karim ?
If someone can show similar period pictures with the 'mixed' silver/gold emblems, then we might be able to enlighten Richard of this little mystery.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.
1970 914-6 - materialised from the 'Lotto' garage into reality
    1971 2.2 911 S - now back in the UK - sob!
1975 Carrera Targa (ROW) - missed.
One of us is fast becoming a valuable antique.

In that era, it seems a vendor did a "hasty" job of "plating" the model number on the "S-trim" cars in gold, to match the script. It faded rather quickly. Curiously, the gold "911S" emblem appears to have held up well, and the gold "911T" to have most lost its lustre.
Not unlike the subsequent black lettering, which turned grey pretty fast.

I worked at a dealer in those days, can't recall "mixed finishes" on the deckled lettering as originally installed. I still maintain that in the precise German way of doing things, they didn't just toss on whatever part was within reach. So what does this mean……..

OMG! Your emblem faded. It was switched. Some po didn't like gold. Some po in the 70's did. You do not have the elusive 1-of-1 factory prototype. And, (clutch your chest here) your car is not original.

    just saying'...

"""I don't care what is shown in publication because it is wrong a lot of the time, I agree with raspy2point2 above as real life observation does not lie. I believe my '71 Targa was delivered with all gold letters except for the rear "911T" which was silver. Do we have anyone else from back in the day who has observed this, Harvey or Ed. Thx!"""

Didn't you say just previously that your "silver" 911T emblem was gold on the backside?

I think Brian says it all….

I am shure an owner could order whatever he wanted once he got the car. The dealer would then "dealer install" or change it to his taste, maybe this was even shown on the dealer invoice…so it could exist.
But that doesn't mean it was available through the factory neither it was an option that could be installed on cars.

I digged into my literature collection, here is what I can report:

    1969 Dealer Sales Handbook
it indicates "Silver lettering on engine lid" was available on special order on 911E and 911S. It was standard on 912 and 911T.
it indicates "Gold lettering on engine lid" was standard equipment on 911E and 911S, available by special order for 911T. Not available for 912.
For 911T, if one ordered the Comfort Group option 9076, it was included, it writes "Gold lettering"

    1969 Product Information and Specifications
for the "Comfort Equipiment Package" it writes "Models insignia in gold".
It does not provide any other option.

    1969 Factory Installed Accessories
it writes "gold lettering Porsche name plate" for Comfort option 9076.
It does not provide any other option.
