    Starter is dragging

In keeping with my mechanical how to series, today's question has to do with my starter. My starter sort of dragging. And not spinning like it should. At first I thought it was the battery, but now after having a new battery installed I realize that was not the starting issue. Do these starters have a solenoid that is on the top of the starter? If yes, how do I know the differences between a bad solenoid vs starter motor issuers? Or are both of these items replaced at the same time? Do I rebuild my starter motor myself or take it to a place like where we take the starters from our skid steer loaders? When they break, we take them to an old school repair shop and they never charge much to fix them. I know they do the brushes, but not sure of what else is done. The Porsche starters are Bosch I believe and I don't know if they work on these or if this is something that has to be done by Bosch factory. Thanks, for the help.

We take our stuff to a facility that's been around since the fifties, as long as they can get the parts they can fix-em. There is no magic to Bosch, if you know how to do quality work they're just like any other part.

I took mine to a local shop that has been around for years. I think they put bushings in it along with the brushes.

Does the solenoid go with the starter? Do you take the brush parts with you or are they able to source them, typically?

Mark, here in Australia we can get re-built Bosch starters, on exchange quite cheaply. They come with a new solenoid. I tried to rebuild my own after checking the solenoid action with a spare battery. It seemed OK but I was not fully convinced and decided on the exchange. I assume you have checked/refurbished the various ground wires on the car. I lost teeth on my flywheel with a starter that was dragging and eventually had a sticking starter drive arm.
