    SWB headlight confusion

    I'm a bit confused about 1967 911 headlights. Basically about the differences between H1 and H4.

    Would a European car have H4 and American have H1?
    I think H4's are flat-against-the-rim at the top and H1's glass protrudes out at the top. Internet photos are kinda hard to tell.

    Sunset Porsche can get "LHD -not for USA" headlight assemblies from Porsche Germany, described as H4.
    Part number 91163111300 (which supersedes 90163110100)

    Is that the correct part for a '67S Euro car?

    On top of that the car was delivered to France, so would it originally have had yellow lamps or lenses?

    The parts guy thought H1's were the USA model or what guys "upgraded" with. He wasn't really sure.

    67 European 911s had neither, H1s or H4s. They will fit fine in that car, though. Still confused?

    The guys above are correct. H1 and H4 are later than 67 lights. H1's first made an appearance (in the UK at least) in 68MY.

    66S, those are beautiful lights.

    It's amazing how many otherwise "correct" SWB cars you see with H4's. As mentioned, H4's weren't introduced until 1972 so they weren't around during the SWB era. H1's, introduced in 1968, are great for '68's, borderline for earlier cars.

    In my opinion, the best looking headlights for SWB's are the Euro lights with the proper flat asymmetric lenses. The lenses match the shape of the car from the side and look great. You can also have great light by having a steathy H4 bulb with a P45T base in there.

    Of course if your car was U.S. delivered and you want to be correct, then you are doomed to have the sealed beam units with the clear lenses mandated by DOT at the time. Again, you can improve things by using one of the "inserts" available at the time, such as Cibies.

    Those Euro lamps with the yellow bulbs would be ideal for your car.

    One might note that the part numbers for the French and "Rest of Europe" headlight assemblies are the same (901.631.101.00)--only the bulb changed. French cars got a yellow bulb.

    Nowadays, you can also find H4 bulbs with a P45t base which will fit those headlights and provide more light. I'm not sure you can get yellow H4 P45t bulbs, though.

    Best of all worlds - correct SWB Euro headlamps with H4 brightness. I haven't been able to find yellow H4 bulbs either.

    John, was it normal for the early sealed beam cars to have one bucket painted flat black? This is how i found it on my car when i pulled it from under a house in Toledo Oregon 18 years ago.. thanks, bp
